The group includes all members of the photosynthetic microscopic organisms, constituent of plankton that drift, float, or weakly swimming in aquatic habitats. Among the common types are cyanobacteria, silica-encased diatoms, dinoflagellates, green algae, and chalk-coated coccolithophores.
